Excursions for Cruisers
Amalfi Coast & Tramonti Valley Wine Experience
- Duration: 8 hours
Description
Your driver will be waiting for you as you step off the ship at the port, ready to take you along one of the most breathtaking coastal roads in the world. The SS163 Amalfitana winds dramatically between mountain and sea, and as the scenery unfolds your driver will share the history of this legendary stretch of coastline, pointing out grand Mediterranean-style villas, some belonging to artists, aristocrats and celebrities and the small fishing villages that have quietly preserved a way of life unchanged for generations.
Along the way, you'll discover hidden gems most visitors simply drive past: secret bays, rugged sea caves and the famous Grotta dello Smeraldo an enchanting natural cave where stalactites and stalagmites meet a pool of water lit from below by underwater tunnels, casting everything in an otherworldly shade of emerald green.
The tour continues into Amalfi, once a formidable Maritime Republic whose influence stretched across the entire Mediterranean. At its centre stands the magnificent Cathedral, founded in the 9th century and layered over the centuries with Arab-Norman, Romanesque and Baroque influences.
From Amalfi, you'll climb up to Ravello, perched on a small promontory the ancients called Cimbronium, overlooking the sea and the villages of Minori and Maiori far below. Boccaccio immortalised its beauty in the Decameron, and J.M.W. Turner captured its light in paintings now held at the Tate Gallery in London. Walking through the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, it's easy to understand why this hilltop village has enchanted artists and poets for centuries.
The day ends with something truly special: a visit to a family-run winery nestled in the peaceful Tramonti valley, where among some of the oldest vines in the world you'll enjoy a guided tour of the estate followed by a relaxed wine tasting paired with a homemade lunch. Sip white, rosé or red wines, breathe in the cool mountain air, and let the valley slow you down before your driver brings you back to the port.
