Excursions for Cruisers
Pompei and Herculaneum full day tour and winery
- Duration: 9 hours
Description
Your driver and guide will be waiting at the port and take you to your first stop: Herculaneum. Less visited than its famous neighbour but, many archaeologists would argue, even more remarkable, this ancient city was buried by the same catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Wooden furniture, delicate jewellery, painted shrines and intimate everyday objects preserved perfectly by the volcanic ash walking through Herculaneum feels less like visiting ruins and more like stepping into a life interrupted.
From there, the journey continues to Pompeii one of the most iconic archaeological sites on earth. In its heyday, this was a thriving, cosmopolitan Roman trading city, home to merchants, artisans and travellers from across the known world. With your guide leading the way through its streets, forums, bathhouses and villas, the scale and complexity of ancient Roman life comes vividly, unexpectedly alive.
The afternoon takes a gentler turn. Your driver will bring you up onto the slopes of Vesuvius itself, to a family-run winery where the volcanic soil produces wines of rare character and depth. Among the vines with the Bay of Naples spread below you, you'll sit down to an organic lunch paired with a guided tasting of local wines a quiet, convivial end to a remarkable day, before returning to your ship at the port.
